Technip awarded a strategic engineering contract for a world class ammonia-urea fertilizer facility in Gabon

September 15, 2011

Technip was awarded by Gabon Fertilizers Company(1) a strategic engineering contract for a world class grassroots ammonia-urea fertilizer project to be developed at Port Gentil, Gabon. The proposed project includes a 2,200 metric ton per day ammonia plant and a 3,850 metric ton per day granulated urea plant with self-sufficient utility & offsite units and product export facilities.

Under this contract, Technip will perform the front-end engineering design for the project as well as the detailed cost estimate for the engineering, procurement and construction phases. Upon completion of the front-end engineering and detailed cost estimate, this contract can be seamlessly converted to a lump sum turnkey contract. Technip will also assist Gabon Fertilizers Company in its project financing efforts. Apart from giving considerable flexibility in the optimal design of the plant, this methodology is expected to result in significant savings in both the capital expenditure cost and project schedule. This is ideally suited for projects in remote locations where the costs and the time schedule are difficult to estimate accurately.

Jean-Marc Aubry, Senior Vice President of Technip’s Region A(2) stated: “this third contract in Gabon this year marks the strong presence of Technip in West and Southern Africa. In this key project for Gabon Fertilizer Company and Technip, we will be focused on maintaining the highest HSE standards, utilize our large onshore project experience in West Africa and work closely with our client’s teams to successfully deliver a world class facility in Gabon. Sustainable development is a core value for Technip; in the execution of this project we will implement community development initiatives in coordination with our client and provide employment opportunities for Gabonese engineers within our Group.

Nello Uccelletti, Senior Vice President, Onshore of Technip also commented: “this award constitutes the first major contract in the revived ammonia-urea fertilizers market and is recognition of Technip’s know-how and experience. Through this project, we are very keen to develop strong relationship with Olam International and TATA Chemicals for future developments in fertilizers and in other segments.”

The project will be executed by Technip’s operating center in Paris, France with support from the Rome, Italy and Chennai, India operating centers.
